No Fences

Petition to Say No to Fences at Pencraig Woods

Wolfstar Archers have utilised Pencraig Woods since 1987, engaging in field archery and with complete public access without any incidents or complaints during this time.

Recently, the East Lothian Land Management Team and Ranger Services have instructed Wolfstar Archers to erect a 6-foot security fence with lockable gates around Pencraig Woods.

This measure aims to restrict public access while the woods are being used for archery. The council has mandated that Wolfstar erect a 6-foot fence around all active archery locations, sealing them off from the general public during use, this fence would enclose the whole of the woods. We are fighting this decision and ask for your support.

We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our East Lothian councillors to act now to prevent the installation of fences at Pencraig Woods. This beautiful natural area should remain open and accessible to all, allowing wildlife to roam freely and visitors to enjoy the unspoiled landscape.

Reasons for opposing fences:

  1. Reduced Access: Fences will limit the general public's access to the woods.
  2. Impact on Wildlife: Fences can disrupt the natural movement of animals, leading to habitat fragmentation and potential harm to local species.
  3. Accessibility: Fences may restrict access for hikers, birdwatchers, and other nature enthusiasts who visit Pencraig Woods for its scenic beauty and tranquility.
  4. Aesthetic Value: The natural beauty of Pencraig Woods is a cherished asset. Fences could detract from the visual appeal and the sense of wilderness that visitors seek.
  5. Financial Burden: Significant costs to Wolfstar Archers without a commitment for access to the woods beyond a 12-month lease.
  6. Community Engagement: Keeping Pencraig Woods open encourages community involvement and fosters a sense of shared responsibility for preserving our natural spaces.

We call on local authorities to reconsider any plans to install fences at Pencraig Woods and to explore alternative measures that protect both field archery, the environment, and public access.
